Deb Heatherly

Deb Heatherly, a former freelance writer for QUILT magazine, traces her first steps in the industry to an article she wrote for the magazine entitled “Everything I know about Quilting, I Learned from my Cats”. That article received such an amazing response that she eventually opened a shop that carried out that theme. Deb’s Cats N Quilts and twelve years of shop ownership were the stepping stones that Deb needed to eventually sell the shop and follow her heart into full time design.

Not only does she write quilting patterns and books, Deb is also the designer of five Creative Grids tools: The Creative Grids Cat’s Cradle Tool, The Strippy Stars Tool, The Turbo 4-Patch, The Ultimate Flying Geese Tool, and the Cat’s Cradle XL. Drawing from her experience as a shop owner, she is also the creator of the Grids Girls shop program. This program is designed to help shop owners with an outline for monthly educational classes using Creative Grids tools. Deb’s online Facebook group, also called Grids Girls, works hand in hand with the program.

Deb’s mother, an accomplished seamstress, taught her to sew at a very early age and encouraged her to create rather than simply follow a pattern. Her mom says that apparently Deb took that advice to heart. Her mother also states that it did not surprise her that Deb chose to combine her love of sewing and cats because even back then there was always a cat somewhere close by.

Deb lives in the beautiful mountains of western NC where inspiration is always just outside the window. She is married and has 4 cats- Lily, Lacey, Max, and Monroe, and a dog named Maggie.
